Although this is not technically a money-saving measure, it's well worth investigating some of the apps that offer free cash prizes, particularly if you are trying to save up a certain amount, because even if you don't win, all that you've lost is a minute or two of your time. It's also worth remembering as well that currently in the United Kingdom, cash prizes are not liable for tax.
Anyway, one such app that's available in the United Kingdom is provided by Sky Sports, and is called Super 6. Though it is football-related, in my opinion it doesn't require too much knowledge of the game and is really easy to use once you get the hang of it.
You are basically required to correctly predict the final scores of six Saturday afternoon football games. Usually five of the games are Premiership games and one of them is from the Championship, which is the league below, so the teams involved are the famous ones.
Just in case someone else guesses the same scores as you and you're both right, creating the need for a tie-breaker, it asks you what minute you think the first goal is going to be scored. If you get it right, you usually win £250,000, but at the time of writing the jackpot is £1 million.
The app allows you to look at each team's latest results, and you are shown a quote from a Sky Sports pundit telling you what they think might happen in the game, so that gives you an idea of what to predict.
To be honest, I follow football reasonably closely, and I'm often wrong about how games turn out, so it's not necessarily an advantage to know a lot about the game. I play it every week during the football season and treat it like it's a free lottery ticket.
It's easy to use, and it only takes a minute or two to do once a week. You usually have until 2pm on the Saturday to make your predictions, and if you've submitted them and change your mind about what you think is going to happen, you can edit them up until this time too.
It's not really clear on the surface why Sky offer this app, because it's as though they are giving away free money, but they perhaps see it as a way of promoting their other services: for example, when you've made your predictions, the app invites you to make a £10 bet through SkyBet on the outcome and shows you how much you'd win if you did so. I never take them up on this offer, though, and you can just ignore this.
Super 6 is available on iOS through the App Store, and through the Google Play Store on Android devices.
